Connection Matters
In “The Power of Connection” by Rik Rushton, Rik speaks about engaging with different personalities (I prefer to use “Drives” rather than personalities as these are constant – “personality” can change).
In the chapter titled “Tune in Before you Broadcast” Rik says that he has learnt that: “When you speak to a person in your preferred way, you speak to their head. When you speak to them in a way that matches their personality, you speak to their heart!”
Respecting our audience’s perspective – knowing and using the knowledge of their Instinctive Drive™ gives us an advantage in making a positive connection and opening the door to our ability to influence and collaborate.
Beware the reverse acknowledgment syndrome – “Yes but on the other hand” is a response to a stated opinion. We quickly change agreement to rejection of a stated opinion or perspective.
“Yes, and on the other hand” removes the rejection and replaces this with a possibility and/or alternative.
As always your feedback is appreciated!
