“To thine own self be true” is a line spoken by Polonius in Shakespeare’s HAMLET as part of a speech where he is giving his son, Laertes, his blessing and advice on how to behave whilst at university!
In our first “Blog” of 2023 we thought it may be helpful to remind ourselves of an essential and intelligent communication strategy as featured in Rik Rushton’s book “The Power of Connection” where he says When you speak to a person in your preferred way,
In “The Power of Connection” by Rik Rushton, Rik speaks about engaging with different personalities (I prefer to use “Drives” rather than personalities as these are constant – “personality” can change).
In his book The Power of Connecting Rik Rushton says “Success, in every realm of your life, is not a solo performance; it comes form engaging with other people, and it’s no surprise that those with superior communication skills achieve higher levels of success”.
If, however, you are Driven to Improvise (and especially combined with resistant Complete) the possibility is that you “scanned” it and put it somewhere to absorb later, being “under the pump”!
Now we look at the last of the “use” Drives – the Drive to Improvise. (If you are Driven this way - stay with me – it won’t take long to read this and absorb the tips for greater efficiency)!
“We all have time – it’s how we use it that counts”
In our time management series based around our dominant Drives, we have looked at the Drive to Verify (9 July 2021) and the Drive to Authenticate (25 August 2021). (For those articles please refer to our website www.leaderconnect.com.au)

For a more personalised ID approach to time management there are great strategies to work with dependent upon your dominant Drive. Here we look at the Drive to Authenticate.
We all have time – the same amount of time – it’s how we use it that counts. Being Driven to Improvise (nothing’s impossible) and resistant Complete, I’m not Driven naturally to time management. My knowledge of this vulnerability, however, enables me to recognise the need to find ways to manage my time better – knowing that I can’t ‘fix’ my avoid Drive and become a Completer! For all Drives there are strategies we can adopt to increase our performance, reduce anxiety and be more “In Stride”.
Understanding the strengths and vulnerabilities of others enables us to “step into their shoes” and see things from their perspective. The key is to “seek first to understand then be understood”.From a team perspective the knowledge and sharing of the I.D. amongst team members is essential to building trust and achieve collaboration. We tend to think that others should see things the way we do which is not the case.
As many (if not all) of you who are acquainted with the use of ID in teams would know, being able to share our “numbers” in team meetings has a special purpose.
