To thine own self be true
“To thine own self be true” is a line spoken by Polonius in Shakespeare’s HAMLET as part of a speech where he is giving his son, Laertes, his blessing and advice on how to behave whilst at university!
A modern day interpretation of these words is “be self-aware”, to have awareness of our own emotions which is being emotionally intelligent (EQ) and having the ability to manage our own emotions and understand the emotions of others around us. Other key elements of EQ are self regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills.
Effective Leaders often have high EQ, which can be partly innate as well as being learned.
This talent enables the understanding of others, as well as self, and contributes to a leader’s communication, authenticity, resilience and empowerment of individuals and teams.
Combined with a leader’s awareness of their own strengths and vulnerabilities this knowledge has significant impact on collaboration, wellbeing in the workforce and team performance.
The assessment of EQ in your business or organisation combined with a “learning” programme will pay significant dividends both now and for the future.
